Would including a professional resources page be a good idea?
I wondered about including my Full Scope of Practice, links to various professional bodies and organizations that would include public access to the principles, code of ethics, values etc that guide my practice. For example, YRNA, PRO-EFW, Relational Horsemanship, Horse Powered Reading and so on.
“Experience meaningful connection through honouring the Horse” Scope of Practice Statements Joie McBryan RN BScN Pro-EFW candidate Pro-EFW Scope of Practice Statement I commit to providing safe Equine Facilitated Service that is legally and ethically within my Scope of Practice supported by my education and experience and as described in this document. Pro-EFW Certification I am a Dually Certified Equine Facilitated Wellness Professional with the Professional Association of Equine Facilitated Wellness Pro-EFW. I hold certification both as a Human Service and Equine Specialist Guiding Philosophy My personal and professional philosophy are the same; all lives matter. We leave an imprint with every interaction, let that imprint be grounded in compassion, honesty, and integrity with an intention to help others see value in their own strengths and gifts while building on challenges. I am lifelong learner and mentor. I offer my gifts to bring value to others. It’s taken a lifetime of experience, nursing and horses, that has given to me in ways I never dreamed. I have been given opportunities to make changes in myself. In turn I use this knowledge to support others that cross my path. Relationship is the key to meaningful support, learning how to be with a being is all about learning how to be with yourself. It’s a lifelong journey; every aspect of our lives is intermingled with the other. It’s my life’s purpose to move with honesty and integrity. The legacy in life that I would like to leave is a quiet imprint. If I touch a being’s life, let it be a positive embrace. If I have tossed the pebble let the shores that this wave touches be bathed in grace and peace. We all have a responsibility to share our gifts of knowledge and expertise, offer those gifts to support others in their own growth in their own way that makes sense to them. To leave each being stronger with each interaction. Let my own light shine bright, shine for myself and shine for others. Everyone matters to someone. My Personal/Professional Scope of Practice in the Human Services Field: I have been a nurse for 35 years; my experience includes rural and remote, community and public health in cross-cultural environments. I have been a member of different health care teams as a direct care-giver in a hospital, remote outpost health centers, community based and public health centers. I have been a mentor, a teacher, a supervisor, a manager and a lifelong learner. I have represented nurses at a federal level. I have been working with and for people my entire career. What is Public Health /Community Health Nursing? Public Health Philosophy is a way of being, a way of seeing and coming to understanding. It’s less about doing and more about being. At its core, it is about what is best for all of us, including the most vulnerable. All lives matter. Its aim is to maintain and improve the health of communities and populations. It crosses multiple fields of study such as health, social and human sciences to touch every aspect of our lives on a daily basis. It is community based but its philosophy and foundational pillars influences any situation. Public health nurses walk with clients on their health journey. They are highly educated and skilled at supporting people where they are at while being available to provide “care” as the client can accept it. Public health nurses’ partner, guide, support, hold space; they are mentors, teachers, counsellors and leaders all in one moment. They impact peoples’ lives from before birth to death and every moment in between. Public Health Nursing becomes a philosophy that is embodied in the nurse who provides the care and guides how the care is provided. My Scope of Practice in Working with Equines I have had horses in my life since I was 9 years old when my dad brought home my first pony, who opened the door and my heart to the gifts of horses. As a “townie” I showed dedication and love for my horses by commuting by bicycle a short distance to care for and spend time with my horses. I was an active participant in a small farming community where my family owned and operated a family butcher shop. My family actively supported and participated in 4H. In order to complete post secondary and move into the nursing world, I parted company with the last of my childhood horses at age 24. My passion and love never waivered and horses were part of my life at various points. In 2010, along with a very horse passionate daughter, horses presented themselves again and I became actively involved with Heart Bar Ranch and the Equine programs that were offered. I joined 4H as the A-Leader (Head Leader) for the Whitehorse Spirit Riders 4H club. Coincidently 2 new horses came into my life. This began a new chapter in my Horse journey, a life long student of the horse. At Heart Bar Ranch I volunteered hours of time to support the Horse Lovers Girls overnight and day camps. Volunteering included: teaching horsemanship, horse support and beginning riding, camp participant support in building skills, confidence, a sense of belonging, independence, partnership, confidence. Supporting, teaching and mentoring Youth Camp Advocates as they learned new skills to support the camp. I was the A-Leader (Head Leader) for the Whitehorse Spirit Riders Horse club for 9 years from 2011-2020. The program consisted of horse focused theory, dismounted and mounted skills. I actively learned, taught and coached, supported and mentored youth while delivering the 4H Canada requirements and curriculum set out for the horse program. On my own learning journey, I supported the growth and development of myself and fellow 4H leaders in various roles; I coordinated club events, fund raisers, I taught public speaking, I acted as liaison with parents, other community members, other 4H clubs, BC4H, National 4H and I acted a chaperone for all activities and field trips both within Yukon and in Canada. I coordinated other equine professionals to provide horse experience through clinics and workshops. I personally full filled all required Leader training to support the emotional, physical and psychological safety of the 4H members and coordinated the same for the other club leaders. I continued to support the club as Key Leader from 2020-2022 and in 2023-currently, became a screened volunteer. I remain a screened volunteer and support the current club in whatever manner the leaders and members require through teaching the curriculum. I attend various types of 4H meetings mounted and otherwise to support the members as they work and learn with their horses. I began my journey into Horsemanship learning through Relational Horsemanship with Mentor Brooke Rempel. Relational Horsemanship is a style of horsemanship that sees the horse as a partner, a sentient being. In Relational Horsemanship, the focus is on understanding who we are as individuals and how our energy is felt by our horses and the world. We focus on meeting our horses needs so that they feel safe with us and are better able to accomplish the things we would like to achieve with them without unnecessary stress and/or anxiety. In 2018 I began regularly participating in clinics and workshops and in April 2021 began a regular mentorship program. I continue to work with Brooke on a regular basis meeting twice a month. I strive to work with all horse in relationship. In 2021 I started working with YFNED: Yukon First Nation Educational Directorate providing horse experiences and progressive horsemanship and riding programing to both participants and youth advocates. Youth advocates attend a Horse Handling workshop and then are mentored into working with the Horse Professional while supporting kids and horses. In 2022 I started working for Shawthan Nahzi: Healing with the Land an intergenerational trauma support program for indigenous people. I provide Equine Family support in a variety of ways within my scope of practice. This includes Horse experiences like overall horsemanship, grooming, petting, walking with, and breathing with. I support horses alongside professional therapists , who provide care in mental health, energy work, art, play, and music. As Joie McBryan Horse Human Connection, I currently provide Equine Facilitated Experiences for a variety of people looking for horse time. These experiences are rooted in horsemanship and include a variety of Equine facilitated activities. I am a certified Equine First Aid Instructor for Equine Health Canada for Standard and Advanced Equine First Aid. I am a certified Horse Powered Reading Instructor. My Scope of Practice in Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) I began my certification with Pro-EFW in May 2022 taking Explorations with Chiron’s Way, it didn’t quite fit with my philosophy so I decided to continue the certification process with Sue McIntosh at Healing Hooves. I have completed all of my required training including with Sue McIntosh at Healing Hooves. I will have all the Training completed by October 2024 and am presently working on Mentorship/supervision and practicum hours with Sue McIntosh.
